The Delta State Local Government Service Commission has commenced its January promotion interview exercise for 976 staff of the Unified Local Government Service, in a move aimed at strengthening human capacity development and enhancing career progression across the local government system.

The promotion exercise, which is one of the Commission’s core statutory responsibilities, is conducted twice yearly, with the January series marking the first phase for the year, while the second phase is scheduled for July.
Speaking at the opening of the exercise, the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Joseph Otirhue, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to the professional growth and advancement of local government staff, stressing that promotions are strictly tied to competence, diligence, and discipline.
Hon. Otirhue urged staff to demonstrate greater commitment to their duties as the new year unfolds, while expressing concern over what he described as a lackadaisical attitude to work among some employees. He cautioned that the Commission would no longer tolerate indiscipline or negligence, warning that sanctions would be applied where necessary.
He charged staff to remain punctual and dedicated at their duty posts, noting that many qualified Nigerians are actively seeking employment opportunities, and as such, workers must guard their positions through hard work and dedication.
Addressing officers participating in the promotion interview, the Commission Chairman advised them to be adequately prepared, stressing that unprepared candidates would henceforth be disqualified and penalised in line with established rules.
During the exercise, certificates and professional documents submitted by staff were thoroughly scrutinised. Officers whose records were complete and in order were promoted, while those with incomplete or invalid documentation were denied advancement.
The Commission reiterated its resolve to ensure that promotion exercises remain transparent, merit-driven, and in line with public service regulations.
