President Tinubu Mourns Former UBA Chairman, Chief Israel Ogbue at 99

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chief Israel Ogbue, who died at the age of 99.

In a State House press release issued on Sunday, the President commiserated with the family, friends, and associates of the late elder statesman, describing his death as the loss of a distinguished public servant and accomplished corporate leader.

Chief Ogbue had a long and meritorious career spanning the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation (NICON), and NAL Merchant Bank before his involvement with UBA. He joined the board of UBA as a non-executive director in 2005 and was later appointed Chairman in 2011, serving until 2013.

In the statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu noted that during his time on the board, Chief Ogbue demonstrated dignity, strategic foresight, and principled leadership, particularly at a critical phase in the bank’s evolution and transformation. His stewardship, the President observed, helped strengthen the institution’s governance and stability.

Chief Ogbue was also the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu, wife of the UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

The President extended heartfelt condolences to the Elumelu family and the extended Ogbue family over the loss. He also sympathised with the Board, management, and staff of UBA, acknowledging the significant impact of the late Chairman’s contributions to the bank and the broader financial sector.

President Tinubu further recognised the numerous tributes celebrating Chief Ogbue’s exemplary life, describing him as a devoted family man, committed public servant, and dedicated Christian who lived humbly. He was remembered for his generosity and service to the church, the poor, the vulnerable, and his community.

Praying for the repose of his soul, the President asked Almighty God to grant eternal rest to the departed patriarch and comfort to his grieving family.
