Former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency election, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, OON, has called on the traditional leaders and people of Asaba to unite and mobilise for an overwhelming victory for the APC in the general election.
Elumelu made the call after a meeting with Obis and other traditional leaders of Asaba at the palace of Obi Ilomechina Obajanma, near Ogwa Umuagu, Asaba, Delta State.
Speaking with journalists in an interview after the meeting, Elumelu said the political leadership and people of Asaba had an important role to play in determining the political direction of Delta State, Delta North and Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the forthcoming elections.
He appealed to the Obis and community leaders to mobilise the entire people of Asaba to actively participate in the electoral process and work for the success of the APC candidates across the various elections.
According to him, Asaba, being the capital of Delta State and an important political and socio-economic centre, could not afford to remain indifferent to the political direction of the state and the country.
Elumelu specifically called on the people of Asaba to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the Delta North Senatorial District, himself as the APC candidate for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency and Hon. Bridget Anyafulu for the State House of Assembly.
He stressed the need for the leaders and people of Asaba to work together with the Governor and other stakeholders to secure victory for the APC across the elections.
The former Minority Leader said Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Delta North Senatorial District and Delta State could not afford to be in the opposition, urging the people to ensure that the area remained politically aligned with the ruling party at the centre.
Elumelu, who was accompanied by members of his campaign council, said the meeting was also an opportunity to engage the traditional institution on issues concerning the development, unity and future of Asaba and the wider Aniocha/Oshimili area.
He emphasised the strategic importance of Asaba, noting that the ancient town occupied a special position as the capital of Delta State and had significant historical, cultural, political and economic relevance to the state and Nigeria.
The APC candidate also used the occasion to congratulate His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, the Obis and the entire people of Asaba on the auspicious occasion of the Asagba’s second New Yam Festival (Iwaji).
Elumelu described the Iwaji celebration as an important expression of the rich cultural heritage of the Asaba people and a demonstration of the enduring strength of their traditional institutions and communal values.
He said the cultural heritage of Asaba and the various communities across Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency should be preserved and passed on to future generations.
According to him, the customs, traditions, festivals and ways of life of the people constituted an essential part of their identity and should not be allowed to go into extinction in the face of modernisation and changing lifestyles.
He urged the younger generation to take pride in their heritage and learn from the traditions handed down by their forebears, stressing that development and modernisation should go hand in hand with the preservation of cultural identity.
Elumelu thanked the Obis and traditional leaders for receiving him and members of his campaign council, while expressing his best wishes to the Asagba, the Obis and the entire people of Asaba as they celebrates the 2026h Iwaji Festival.
He prayed for peace, unity, prosperity and continued development for Asaba and the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency.
