CAN Honours Tony Elumelu with Christian Patriot Award at Golden Jubilee Celebration

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has honoured the Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Dr. Tony Onyemaechi Elumelu, CFR, with its prestigious Christian Patriot Award in recognition of his contributions to business, economic empowerment, ethical leadership and nation-building.

The award was conferred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during the celebration of CAN’s 50th anniversary at the National Christian Centre, Central Business District, Abuja, with eminent personalities from across Nigeria and beyond in attendance.

Dr. Tony Elumelu was represented at the ceremony by his younger brother, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, OON, Minority Leader of the 9th House of Representatives, who received the prestigious award on his behalf.

The award was presented by the President of CAN, His Eminence, Archbishop Dr. Daniel Okoh, as part of activities marking the golden jubilee of the foremost Christian umbrella body in Nigeria.

The Christian Patriot Award recognises distinguished individuals whose professional achievements, integrity, commitment to faith and contributions to societal advancement exemplify the values of service, compassion and responsible leadership.

In selecting Dr. Elumelu for the honour, CAN acknowledged his pioneering role in Africa’s business landscape and his sustained commitment to entrepreneurship, economic inclusion and human capital development through his business interests and philanthropic initiatives.

As Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Dr. Elumelu has championed entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic opportunity, particularly for young Africans.

Through the Foundation’s programmes, he has supported aspiring entrepreneurs with funding, training and mentorship to foster self-reliance, enterprise development and job creation across the continent.

His leadership at Heirs Holdings and other business interests has also contributed to advancing the philosophy of Africapitalism, which emphasises the role of private-sector investment in driving Africa’s economic and social development.

Speaking on behalf of the award recipient, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the recognition and appreciated the leadership and entire membership of CAN for choosing to honour his elder brother on such a significant occasion in the history of the Christian community in Nigeria.

He described the Christian Patriot Award as a profound honour, particularly because it came from the Christian body, noting that the recognition represented more than an acknowledgement of professional accomplishments; it was also an affirmation of the values of faith, service, compassion and responsibility to society.

According to him, the award was especially meaningful because it was being conferred during CAN’s golden jubilee, a milestone that reflects five decades of the Association’s contribution to Christian unity, spiritual leadership and national engagement.

Rt. Hon. Elumelu conveyed his brother’s appreciation to Archbishop Okoh, the CAN leadership and its members, describing them as instruments through which God had chosen to recognise and celebrate his contributions.

He further acknowledged that the honour carried a responsibility to remain steadfast in the pursuit of values that promote human dignity, economic opportunity, peaceful coexistence and the overall development of Nigeria and Africa.

The recognition of Dr. Tony Elumelu at the golden jubilee celebration reinforces the importance of connecting professional excellence with ethical conduct, faith-inspired service and a commitment to the common good.

The ceremony formed part of CAN’s 50th anniversary activities, commemorating the Association’s five decades of service to the Christian community and its engagement with issues affecting Nigeria’s spiritual, social and national development.
