The Nigerian Armed Forces has announced plans to arraign some of its officers before a military judicial panel over allegations of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who said the action is in line with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
According to the statement, the development follows an earlier announcement by the Defence Headquarters in October 2025 on the arrest of 16 officers for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service rules. The Armed Forces said investigations into the matter have now been concluded, with the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in accordance with extant regulations.
Major General Uba explained that the investigation was comprehensive and conducted strictly in line with established military procedures, with all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel thoroughly examined.
“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, an act which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement noted.
He stressed that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of the military’s internal mechanisms to safeguard order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
“Accordingly, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. This process ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process,” the statement added.
The Armed Forces further reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority, assuring the public of their resolve to uphold the highest standards of military conduct.
