The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has announced the death of Comrade Mathew Ochei, a member of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel, describing his passing as shocking and deeply painful.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the Union said Comrade Ochei passed on in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026 after a brief illness, a development that has thrown the chapel and the entire NUJ family in the state into mourning.
According to the statement, the demise of Comrade Ochei has cast a pall of grief over the Council, noting that his death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life. The NUJ described the late journalist as a warm and committed member whose contributions to the Union endeared him to colleagues.
The Council expressed deep anguish over the loss, stating that Comrade Ochei’s passing has left many who knew and worked with him heartbroken.
“At this moment of immense grief, the NUJ stands in solidarity with the bereaved family, sharing in their sorrow and pain,” the statement read. The Union extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and prayed that God, in His infinite mercy, grants them the strength, comfort and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The NUJ Delta State Council further prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed and urged members to draw strength and consolation from his memories.
Comrade Mathew Ochei was until his death an active member of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Delta State.
