President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to serve with integrity and ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
Prof. Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was sworn in on Thursday at the State House Council Chamber, following his confirmation by the Senate on October 16.
In his remarks, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of electoral integrity, noting that the governorship election in Anambra State on November 8, 2025, would serve as a test for the new INEC leadership.
“The electoral process is a vital part of a democracy that grants the people the exclusive right to choose their leaders and shape their future. To ensure that our democracy continues to flourish, the integrity of our electoral process must be beyond reproach,” the President said.
President Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s democracy had made significant progress since 1999, with notable achievements in strengthening institutions and electoral systems.
He urged Prof. Amupitan to protect the integrity of the electoral process, strengthen INEC’s institutional capacity, and rebuild public trust in the commission.
Prof. Amupitan, 58, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC Chairman ended in 2025. He had outlined plans to reform Nigeria’s electoral system, strengthen institutional independence, and rebuild public trust in the commission during his screening.
The new INEC Chairman assumes office immediately, with the task of ensuring credible elections and upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
