Tinubu Pledges to Safeguard Democracy, Rejects One-Party State

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, declaring that a one-party state is not in the country’s best interest.

Speaking at a joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate Democracy Day, Tinubu emphasized the importance of democratic institutions and the need for cooperation between the executive and legislative branches.

In his address, Tinubu stated, “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.”

He also welcomed new members to his party, saying, “It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”

Tinubu highlighted the progress made in the economy, citing a 3.4% GDP growth in 2024 and increased foreign reserves. He also announced plans to empower young Nigerians with consumer credit and invest in critical infrastructure.

The President paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, including Kudirat Abiola and Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and announced the conferment of national honours on several prominent Nigerians.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of tolerance and broad-mindedness in legislative actions, saying, “Be tolerant and broad-minded in your legislative action regarding speech and civil liberties.”

He also called for cooperation between the executive and legislative branches, stating, “I pledge myself to this cooperation and ask that you do the same for the good of our people.”

The President’s address was well-received by lawmakers, who appreciated his commitment to democracy and national development.

In conclusion, Tinubu’s address was a call to action for all Nigerians to work together to build a stronger, more prosperous nation.
