The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally rejected the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the move as unnecessary, destabilising and capable of dragging the image of the party into disrepute.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and signed by the Rivers State APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it was alarmed by the latest developments emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly.
While acknowledging the legislature as an independent arm of government with constitutionally guaranteed powers of checks and balances, the APC stated that it could not support the resort to impeachment, especially when the issues at stake stem from unresolved political disputes inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The party stressed that it would be “totally untenable” to remain silent while internal conflicts are allowed to resurface and threaten the stability of an APC-led government in the state.
Addressing claims that the impeachment threat is linked to budgetary matters, the APC recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.
According to the party, the approved budget is valid for one year and is expected to run until August 2026. It noted that the governor is not under any constitutional obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is comfortable with the existing one, adding that the constitution also permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.
The APC therefore called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the party’s platform, to resist alleged external pressures aimed at destabilising the government.
“We strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilise the Government of Rivers State ably led by His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” the statement read.
The party further warned that it would take all necessary steps to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State is not undermined by internal disagreements, urging lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process.
According to the APC, halting the process is necessary to safeguard the party’s image and prevent any setback to the ongoing progress and development of the state.
The statement called for the preservation of democratic governance in Rivers State, cautioning against what it described as a drift towards “politicocracy.”
