Delta House of Assembly Passes LG Autonomy, … As State NULGE Boss, Okwudi Hails Assembly

The Delta State House of Assembly has finally passed the Local Government autonomy bill, with the State President of NULGE in the State, Comrade Ezeko Okwudi commending members of the Assembly for the passage.

The bill was passed on Wednesday July 20, 2022 sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion to that effect moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Ferguson Onwo at the resumed sitting of the House presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sherriff Oberevwori at the Legislative Chamber, Asaba.

Speaking at Plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sherriff Oberevwori said the passage of the Local Government Autonomy Bill was in line with the yearnings and aspirations of Deltans and the Nigerian people at large.

The State President of NULGE, Comrade Ezeko Okwudi in company of members of the State Executive Council of the Union was in attendance at the House of Assembly to observe proceedings.

Speaking with journalists, Comrade Okwudi who was visibly elated described the passage of the bill as a step in the right direction and said that the State House of Assembly has become the sixth state in Nigeria to have passed the Bill on Local Government Autonomy.

Okwudi however, said it is not yet over, for the fact that the concurrence of 24 Houses of Assembly in Nigeria is required to make the bill become law, even as he urged other States Houses of Assembly to emulate Delta State House of assembly and urgently pass the bill.

He further explained that the benefits of Local Government Autonomy transcend the Union and its employees, saying it will be for the generality of the people at the local level.

The NULGE President also expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for his support and cooperation towards the passage of the bill.
