The Delta State Police Command has arrested one suspect and launched a manhunt for two others in connection with the death of Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education.
The incident reportedly occurred at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the police said it had received reports concerning the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death, including allegations that he was physically assaulted by three aides to the Commissioner.
The aides were identified as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
Edafe said the Command moved swiftly upon receiving the complaints, resulting in the arrest of Lucky Adoh, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the two other suspects who were said to be at large.
“The Command, upon receipt of the complaints, immediately swung into action and arrested one of the suspects, Lucky Adoh, while a serious manhunt for the other fleeing suspects has been launched,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, has ordered the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent death of the deceased.
According to the police, the investigation will examine all available evidence, including video footage, eyewitness accounts, medical records and the actions of all persons connected with the incident.
The Command said the objective was to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that any person found culpable was brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased’s family, concerned citizens and the general public that the Command would not shield anyone found culpable, regardless of the person’s status or position.
“The Command will neither shield nor spare anyone found culpable, irrespective of status or position,” the statement quoted the CP as saying.
The police further assured the public that relevant updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
