DTSG Inaugurates SURWASH Programme Steering Committee

The Delta State Government has said that it will continue to collaborate with development partners and other institutions to improve the well being of the residents of the state.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, stated this at the inauguration of the State Steering Committee of the World Bank approved Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme and the State Programme Implementation Unit (SPIU).

Chief Ukah said the inauguration of the committee was to boost activities connected with urban and rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene development, and charged members of the committees to ensure probity and commitment in order to achieve set goals.

He said the State Programme Implementation Unit would be responsible for the management and implementation of state level programme components as well as supervision, monitoring and evaluation of local government areas level activities.

The SSG also stated that the Commissioner for Economic Planning would function as the portfolio focal person for the SURWASH Programme while Dr. Melody Ogwezzy would serve as the Project Co-ordinator for the SPIU.

Chief Ukah noted that members of the SURWASH Committee and the SPIU must ensure compliance with the specifications as enshrined in the World Bank guidelines for the Project.

SURWASH Steering Committee, which comprises 14 members, has the Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Hon. Evelyn Oboro, as the Chairman, while the SPIU with 11 members has Dr. Melody Ogwezzy as the Project Co-ordinator.

Earlier, Hon. Oboro, who commended the World Bank for its intervention in SURWASH in the water sector, said it would impact positively on the lives of many Deltans and reposition the water sector.

She thanked the SSG for support and commitment towards the realization of the SURWASH and pledged that the inaugurated members of the committees would do their best to achieve set goals.
