NUJ Honors Tompolo For Safeguarding Nigeria’s Oil Infrastructure

In a significant recognition of efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure and combat illicit activities in the Niger Delta, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) honored former freedom fighter High Chief Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, with the “Internal Security Meritorious Award.” The ceremony, held at Oporoza Community, headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, marked a pivotal moment in acknowledging Tompolo’s contributions to national security.

Presenting the award, NUJ National President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, lauded Tompolo’s patriotic dedication to restoring stability in Nigeria. Dr. Isiguzo emphasized the Union’s recognition of Tompolo’s role in combating oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other illicit activities in the Niger Delta region. He remarked, “The NUJ, having properly profiled the activities of Chief Government Ekpemupolo, Alias Tompolo, the Union is impressed with his patriotic zeal to ensure that Nigeria works again.”

This award came as a result of the National Security Conference in Abuja on February 22, 2024, where Dr. Solomon Arase, Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former Inspector General of Police, alongside other prominent figures, deliberated on strategies to address Nigeria’s pressing security challenges. At the conference, discussions highlighted the multifaceted nature of insecurity across different regions, including armed banditry in the North West, insurgency in the North East, secessionist aspirations in the South East, and ritual killings and kidnapping in the South West.

Tompolo’s efforts in maintaining peace in the Niger Delta were recognized as instrumental in curbing crude oil theft, a persistent threat to Nigeria’s economic stability. Dr. Isiguzo stressed the collective responsibility of all Nigerians in enhancing national security, urging collaboration with security agencies to foster development and prosperity.

Expressing gratitude for the honor, Tompolo reiterated his commitment to Nigeria’s advancement and protection, emphasizing the need for unity and collective effort in safeguarding government properties and facilities to protect the nation’s economy from sabotage. High Chief McDonald Igbadiwei echoed these sentiments, calling upon the Federal Government to provide Tompolo with necessary support to secure oil facilities and bolster national revenue generation.

The ceremony, attended by prominent figures including Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere and Traditional Prime Minister of Ijaw Gbaramatu Kingdom Hon. Chief MacDonald Igbadiwei, underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring Nigeria’s security and prosperity. NUJ officials, including Secretary Shuaibu Usman Leman and Deputy National President Alhassan Zyahaya Abdullahi, were also present, along with Leaders of the Delta Council Executive, reaffirming the Union’s commitment to honoring those who contribute significantly to national stability.
