Mrs. Agatha Elumelu-Obiekwugo, sister of prominent Nigerian businessman and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afriland Properties Plc.
She succeeds Mr. Emmanuel Nnorom, who is retiring after more than a decade of service as Chairman of the real estate company.
Afriland Properties announced the leadership change on Monday, August 31, 2026, describing it as part of efforts to strengthen its board leadership and consolidate the company’s position as it expands its property portfolio and deepens its presence in Nigeria’s real estate sector.
Elumelu-Obiekwugo has been a Non-Executive Director on the Afriland Properties Board since October 2018. During her eight years on the board, she has contributed to the company’s governance and strategic direction through her service on key committees, including the Finance, Risk and General-Purpose Committee, and the Nomination, Audit and Governance Committee.
She brings more than 30 years of professional experience spanning banking, business, consulting and the oil and gas sectors to her new role.
Her appointment comes as Afriland Properties continues to strengthen its position as a major institutional real estate investment, development and management company in Nigeria.
Headquartered in Lagos, Afriland Properties is an investee company of Tony Elumelu’s Heirs Holdings and has built a significant presence in the country’s property market, with a substantial land bank and a multi-billion-naira property portfolio.
The company operates across the real estate value chain, including property development, asset and property management, facilities management and strategic joint-venture investments with institutional investors and landowners.
Its portfolio includes premium residential and institutional developments, while its investment strategy is focused on unlocking value from real estate assets and delivering large-scale developments across Nigeria and the wider African market.
Elumelu-Obiekwugo’s elevation to the chairmanship is expected to provide continuity in the company’s governance while bringing her extensive experience and strategic perspective to the leadership of Afriland Properties as it pursues its next phase of growth.
Her appointment also marks a significant milestone in the company’s leadership, coming after the retirement of Nnorom, whose more than ten years as Chairman contributed to the evolution and strengthening of Afriland Properties’ corporate governance and operations.
With the transition, Afriland Properties enters a new leadership phase under an experienced boardroom professional, as it seeks to expand its property portfolio, strengthen its market position and create sustainable long-term value for stakeholders.
