Renowned conference speaker and governance advocate, Charles Apoki, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 2026 edition of the Advocate Publication Annual Lecture Series.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Advocate Lecture Series Board of Council (ALSBC), Abraham Ogbodo, in a press release issued by the Board’s Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha. According to the statement, Dr. Apoki emerged as the Board’s choice after a rigorous selection process aimed at identifying a speaker whose background and experience align with the objectives of the 2026 lecture.
The Board explained that the internationally recognised speaker and advocate of good governance has built a reputation as a resource person to corporate organisations, institutions and government ministries, making him well suited to address the critical governance questions the lecture intends to explore.
Dr. Apoki will present a keynote address titled From Ballot to Patronage: Why Electoral Victory Fails to Deliver Good Governance in Nigeria.” The lecture will hold on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Wetland Hotel.
According to the organisers, the event will also feature a panel discussion involving experts drawn from the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations who will interrogate the issues raised in the keynote paper.
The ALSBC noted that the 2026 lecture will examine the widening gap between electoral victory and effective governance in Nigeria. The discourse will explore how electoral processes sometimes evolve into instruments for transferring political power from the electorate to influential patrons rather than producing accountable leadership.
Participants are expected to analyse the impact of godfatherism, weak institutional oversight and the monetisation of politics on democratic governance, while proposing practical reforms capable of restoring public confidence in the electoral system and strengthening the link between elections, service delivery and national development.
Dr. Apoki is a distinguished graduate of the University of Ibadan College of Medicine, where he obtained his medical degree in 1984. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. An ordained clergyman and widely respected conference speaker, he has addressed diverse audiences across several denominations and professional platforms.
Over the years, he has travelled widely across Africa and Europe in the course of his ministry, delivering teachings and transformational messages. He is also the convener of the Word and Wisdom Conference, a leadership and capacity-building platform that brings together pastors, church leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals for development and empowerment.
In addition to his ministerial and speaking engagements, Dr. Apoki is the proprietor of Petra Christian Academy, which provides nursery, primary and secondary education in Nigeria. He is also known for his work as a marriage counsellor.
