Former Governor of Delta State and South-South Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has called on Nigerians, particularly workers, to support the ongoing reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the initiatives are already yielding positive results across key sectors of the economy.
Okowa disclosed that no fewer than 1.6 million students in tertiary institutions nationwide have benefited from the Federal Government’s National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing the scheme as one of the flagship reforms designed to expand access to higher education and ease the financial burden on students and their families.
He made the remarks in Asaba while receiving the national leadership of Working People United (WPU) during a courtesy visit.
According to the former governor, President Tinubu assumed office at a critical period in Nigeria’s history and has demonstrated the courage to implement difficult but necessary reforms aimed at repositioning the nation’s economy.
He noted that although many initially dismissed NELFUND as unrealistic, the programme has continued to gain credibility as thousands of eligible students have successfully accessed the facility. He, therefore, encouraged those yet to take advantage of the initiative to register and benefit from the scheme.
Okowa also highlighted other key policy reforms of the Tinubu administration, including the push for State Police, the deregulation of the electricity generation sub-sector, and the removal of fuel subsidy, stressing that the measures were beginning to address longstanding socio-economic and governance challenges.
He expressed confidence that the administration’s reform agenda would, in the long run, deliver sustainable economic growth and national development, adding that President Tinubu deserved a second term to consolidate and complete the transformation process.
The former governor urged members of Working People United and other well-meaning Nigerians to mobilize support for the President ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that more citizens would increasingly appreciate the impact of the administration’s policies.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of Working People United, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said the delegation visited Okowa to acquaint him with the objectives of the organization and formally inaugurate its Delta State chapter.
Akporeha explained that the group’s membership cuts across the public and private sectors, as well as self-employed professionals and artisans, adding that its mission is to promote good governance and constructive political engagement.
He pledged the support of the organization for Senator Okowa’s senatorial ambition, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
The visit culminated in the conferment of the title of Patron of Working People United (WPU) on Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa in recognition of his contributions to leadership and public service.
