The emergence of Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general election has once again brought his political journey and public service record into focus.
Elumelu’s victory in the recently concluded APC primary election was a significant political development in Delta State. It not only reaffirmed his standing within the party but also signalled the confidence many party faithful and stakeholders continue to repose in his leadership and capacity to represent the people.
The former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives secured the party’s ticket ahead of the incumbent representative, Hon. Ngozi Okolie, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party before later defecting to the APC.
The outcome of the primary election has since generated widespread discussions across the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency.
For many supporters and political observers, Elumelu’s emergence was hardly surprising. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a grassroots politician with a strong connection to his constituents.
Having represented the constituency for three terms in the House of Representatives, he remains one of the most recognisable political figures in the area.
His return to the House in 2019, after a four-year hiatus following his governorship aspiration in Delta State, demonstrated remarkable political resilience. it was evidence of an enduring relationship with the electorate and a testament to the goodwill he had cultivated through years of service.
Throughout his political career, Elumelu has projected himself as a leader who values accessibility, consultation and community engagement. While, like every politician, he has faced criticisms and political challenges, his consistency and commitment to the interests of his constituents remains qualities that distinguishes him.
His legislative journey has been marked by several notable milestones. In 2007, he made history by becoming Chairman of the House Committee on Power as a first-time member of the House of Representatives, an achievement that remains remarkable within the annals of the National Assembly.
He later served as Chairman of the House Committee on Health and was a member of several strategic committees, including Information, Climate Change, Interior, Water Resources, Science and Technology, National Security and Public Safety.
These assignments provided him with valuable experience and broader perspectives on governance and national development.
Beyond legislative responsibilities, Elumelu has earned recognition for his philanthropic activities and commitment to community development. Across Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, numerous beneficiaries continue to attest to the impact of his empowerment programmes for youths, women and vulnerable groups.
His interventions in education, healthcare and economic empowerment have endeared him to many communities, resulting in numerous honours, traditional titles and awards in recognition of his humanitarian contributions.
As Minority Leader of the 9th House of Representatives, Elumelu occupied one of the most prominent positions in the National Assembly. In that role, he played a key part in legislative debates, policy advocacy and efforts aimed at strengthening democratic governance.
His legislative record includes sponsorship of several bills and motions addressing critical national issues. Among the notable bills associated with his tenure are the Federal Audit Service Commission Bill, the National Health Insurance Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, the Maritime University, Okerenkoko Establishment Bill, the Data Protection Bill, the Federal University of Technology, Asaba Establishment Bill, and the Chartered Institute of Health Insurance and Managed Care of Nigeria Bill.
He also sponsored a constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of Anioma State, a proposal that resonated strongly with many people of Delta North Senatorial District and remains a subject of considerable interest.
In addition, Elumelu sponsored and supported several motions on public accountability, infrastructure development and institutional reforms. His contributions to legislative oversight and policy discussions earned him recognition as an active and vocal lawmaker.
As the 2027 general election approaches, voters in Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency will once again have the opportunity to assess the credentials, track records and vision of those seeking their mandate.
For Elumelu, the election presents another opportunity to build on his previous experience and reconnect with the electorate on issues that matter most to them. As victory is assured at the polls, expectations will undoubtedly be high.
Among the pressing concerns requiring attention are infrastructure deficits, particularly the deplorable condition of several roads within the constituency, including the Ubulu-Uku–Onicha-Ugbo Road, which has remained a source of concern for residents for years. Other critical areas include youth employment, healthcare delivery, education and rural development.
The people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, like many Nigerians, continue to seek responsive and effective representation that translates into tangible improvements in their daily lives.
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Elumelu’s emergence as the APC candidate has undoubtedly added a new dimension to the political landscape of the constituency. Whether viewed through the lens of experience, legislative accomplishment or grassroots engagement, his candidacy represents a familiar hand seeking another opportunity to serve.
