The All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed all Local Government Chairmen aspiring to contest for seats in State Houses of Assembly to resign their current positions, reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy and electoral integrity.
In a press statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, May 2, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party said the directive aligns with its constitutional provisions and existing electoral laws guiding political participation in Nigeria.
The APC National Chairman, according to the statement, emphasized that party members occupying executive positions must relinquish such offices before seeking another elective position. He noted that the move is essential to ensure fairness and eliminate undue advantage in the electoral process.
The statement further explained that the directive is consistent with the Electoral Act 2022, which discourages the use of incumbency to influence party primaries and general elections. It added that guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also support the principle of a level playing field for all aspirants.
“The directive is not punitive but a necessary step to uphold democratic principles, strengthen internal party processes, and promote equity among aspirants,” the statement read.
The ruling party urged all affected Local Government Chairmen to comply promptly as preparations intensify for what it described as a credible and transparent primary election process.
Reiterating its broader commitment, the APC maintained that it remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law, ensuring fairness, and consolidating democratic values across all levels of governance in the country.
