2027: Aspirants Urged to Shun Politics of Calumny, Focus on Issues

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, aspirants seeking elective offices have been urged to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory rhetoric capable of overheating the polity.

A former Senior Legislative Aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives under the Office of the Minority Leader, Hon. Surveyor Charles Ogedi, condemned what he described as a growing trend of campaigns of calumny by some aspirants and their supporters.

Ogedi, who is also a former President-General of Obomkpa Community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, expressed concern over what he described as recent attacks allegedly made by a member of the State House of Assembly against certain political leaders over their political affiliations and preferences.

He noted that the legislature remains the bastion of democracy and should attract only individuals with proven character, competence, and integrity.

According to him, lawmakers seeking re-election should present their achievements and records in office to party members and constituents, who would ultimately determine whether they deserve another term.

Hon. Ogedi also advised supporters of political aspirants to make constructive use of social media by promoting the programmes, achievements, and visions of their preferred candidates rather than engaging in mudslinging and divisive publications.

He warned that contemptuous and provocative comments on social media could heighten political tension and undermine peaceful democratic engagement ahead of the elections.

Commending the campaign approach of Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Ogedi described it as mature, peaceful, and development-focused.

He noted that Elumelu and his supporters had continued to project their political message without resorting to attacks, while also highlighting the achievements of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ogedi further applauded Governor Oborevwori for ensuring what he described as a level playing field for all aspirants across the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

He called on politicians, supporters, and stakeholders to embrace civility, tolerance, and issue-based engagements in order to sustain peace and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
