FUPRE to Honour Ndudi Elumelu with ‘Champion of Sustainable Development Award’, Establish Endowment Chair in His Name

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, through its Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD), has announced the nomination and conferment of a prestigious honour on the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, OON, in recognition of his exceptional leadership and enduring contributions to sustainable development in Nigeria.

In a formal letter dated April 10, 2026, and signed by the Centre Director, Prof. Emeka Elemike, alongside the Deputy Director/External Partnership Liaison, Deacon Okezi Odugala, the institution conveyed its deep admiration for Elumelu’s visionary leadership and untiring commitment to advancing sustainable growth across key sectors of national development.

The university disclosed that Elumelu will be conferred with the “Champion of Sustainable Development Award”, a distinguished recognition reserved for individuals whose impactful interventions have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s economic resilience and aligned with global development frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030) and the African Union Agenda 2063.

According to the letter, Elumelu’s remarkable strides in human capital development, education, healthcare delivery, and social infrastructure have not only transformed communities but also restored confidence in Nigeria’s capacity for inclusive and sustainable progress.

In a move widely described as historic and legacy defining, the Centre further announced the establishment of an Endowment Chair on Sustainable Development in Elumelu’s name or that of a nominee of his choice.

The Endowment Chair, to be domiciled at the CSD, is expected to drive cutting-edge research, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at addressing Nigeria’s sustainability challenges while nurturing future leaders in development practice.

The institution also revealed plans to undertake a comprehensive study to document the far-reaching impact of Elumelu’s interventions, thereby preserving his contributions as an enduring reference point for policy, research, and national development discourse.

“The Postgraduate Endowment Chair will cement your legacy in sustainable development, inspire academic excellence and innovative solutions among students, faculty, and stakeholders, as well as foster collaborative research addressing Nigeria’s sustainability challenges,” the statement noted.

As part of preparations for the honour, the Centre has requested Elumelu’s approval for a three-man delegation to embark on a courtesy and study visit to his project sites for on-the-spot assessment and documentation.

The formal investiture and conferment ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 22, 2026, during the Centre’s 5th Anniversary and Roundtable on Sustainable Development, themed “Adaptive Local Content Mechanisms as a Panacea for Sustainable Development,” at the Pinnacle Castle Hotel.

The event is expected to attract key stakeholders from academia, government, and the private sector, further underscoring Elumelu’s growing influence as a national figure in sustainable development advocacy and practice.

The Centre congratulated the former Minority Leader on what it described as a “well-deserved recognition,” expressing optimism that the honour will further amplify his impact while strengthening institutional collaboration towards building a more sustainable and prosperous Nigeria.
