Police Order Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Fatal Shooting

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, in a decisive move aimed at reinforcing accountability within its ranks.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the police confirmed that the action followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings into the April 26 incident that led to the death of Mr. Mene Ogidi.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, had earlier directed the immediate withdrawal of all officers connected to the incident from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for thorough investigation and disciplinary review.

Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) established that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms. The committee described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect lives and uphold the law.

Consequently, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman alongside other culpable officers. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The statement further disclosed that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in what has been described as an extrajudicial killing.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed that the Nigeria Police maintains a zero-tolerance policy on abuse of power and unlawful use of force. He emphasized that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law, warning that violators would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.

The police leadership also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their pain and assuring them that justice would be served transparently to restore public confidence.

The Force urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity.
